Intel beats AMD to release quad-core processors
Intel has released its latest generation of quad-core processors, beating AMD which plans to release its Barcelona quad-core processors next week.

Intel’s Xeon 7300 series can provide three times the performance per watt than the company’s previous dual-core models.

With its improved energy efficiency, the 7300 series features processors that can run up to 2.93 GHz at 130 watts. The 80-watt processors, and a 50-watt version optimised for four socket blades and high-density rack form factors, can run up to 1.86 GHz.

The 7300 chipset features Data Traffic Optimisations and new technologies that enhance data movement between the processors, memory and I/O connections.

Quad-core processors are typically used in servers which run business networks, or workstations which process huge amounts of data. They are ideal for machines which run intensive applications such as gaming, burning DVDs and downloading movies.

Intel expected Dell, Hewlett-Packard , IBM, Unisys and other major manufacturers to announce servers based on its Xeon 7300 series,

The new quad-core processors are priced from $856 to $2,301 per 1,000, depending on their speed, features and order volume.
