Microsoft is planning to launch its new Xbox 360 game for the Christmas shopping season.

Microsoft unveiled the Xbox 360 in May and had already announced plans to launch the console this year in the US ahead of the holiday season, which begins in late November. The company had said that European and Japanese launches would follow within six weeks.

The new Xbox console is white-and-silver, concave in shape and features three PowerPC-based microprocessors joined onto one chip. It will provide powerful computing and advanced graphics and has a detachable 20GB hard drive and a wireless controller.

Microsoft aims to gain market share from the current videogame market leader Sony, by launching the Xbox 360 well ahead of Sony’s planned launch of its PlayStation 3 in spring 2006.

Sony controls more than two-thirds of the videogame console market.
