Dell Inc. has responded to complaints on its IdeaStorm blog about the amount of software it pre-installs on new computers.

The company now plans to give customers more control over software during the purchase process.

Dell.com customers who buy an XPS system, Inspiron notebook or Dimension desktop can now select to have no software preinstalled by clicking a field on Dell’s online order form.

This will eliminate productivity, ISP, photo and music software, but Adobe Reader, trial versions of antivirus software, and Google tools will still come packaged on the desktop.

Software companies pay PC vendors to install their applications on new computers. This helps PC vendors bolster their profits, particularly as hardware tends to have low-margins.

Dell has also provided a video on its site, which demonstrates how to use a software uninstall utility on Dimension desktops and Inspiron notebooks, to help new computer users remove software they don’t want.
