Yukos executives flee Russia

Accroding to the BBC: Yukos executives 'flee' Russia

Fear of arrest has forced all the top executives at Russian oil giant Yukos to flee the country.

The entire management board met in London earlier this week and remains in Europe, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

The management board left following a flurry of warrants for their arrest from Russian government prosecutors.

It's a shame I'm haven't kept up with political intrigue involved - but I'm sure it would make a darn interesting book. The apparent signals in the media are that the Kremlin came down on Yukos for daring to be outside of its political control, as per here: Q&A: The battle for Yukos

While most of Russia's other oligarchs concentrated on simply getting richer and richer, and on getting their money out of the country, Mr Khodorkovsky went into politics and used his fortune to fund opposition groups.

His supporters claim that Mr Khodorkovsky's growing influence in public life - particularly his acquisition of the rights to publish the influential newspaper Moskovskiye Novosti - was seen as a threat by the Kremlin.

However, it remains to be seen how the accusations actually cope under scrutiny in a Moscow court.
