Cardiff University is deploying a ‘Smartmobile’ wireless LAN, including a Wi-Fi management system from Trapeze Networks, creating the largest wireless LAN in the UK.

The university is expanding the existing wireless network for its Cathays Park campus and outlying peripheral sites as part of its Modern Working Environment project, which forms the core of its Information Services Strategy.

The wireless network will be built by education ICT supplier RM. It will cover an area of three square miles, providing wireless connectivity to 66 buildings. The network will include over 1,300 access points and cater for 30,000 students, 5,000 staff and guests visiting the campus.

The Ringmaster management platform supplied by Trapeze Networks was chosen for its ease of use. Ringmaster allows the Wireless LAN administrator to configure, control and monitor all the devices and users on the network at the click of a button.
