Windows 98 - a revolution in its time during te 1990’s, is not being officially closed down.

As of July 11th, Microsoft will no longer release upgrades and patches to the Windows 98 operating system.

The change affects Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (Millenium).

Although free support stopped in 2003, paid support was still unavailable until now, and there is an estimated 70 million Windows 98 users worldwide.

However, some security companies will continue to supply updates for Windows 98 users, though have added that a significant amount of modern malware is simply incapable of runnig on Windows 98 machines.

Additionally, help files will remain available online until July 11th 2007.

The fact that Windows 98 has continued to be supported for so long is testament to its poineering success, and a key platform for internet connectivity and integration during the late 1990’s, when internet use was becoming increasingly popular.

However, with the majority of users already migrated to Windows XP - and with Microsoft’s Vista on the horizon for next year, Windows 98 is increasingly becoming another footnote in technology history.
