Organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games are promoting the use of energy-saving green IT initiatives and web 2.0 technologies for the event.

Previous Olympics have published competition results on a dedicated website, but the London Organising Committee is taking its IT plans much further. They are considering a range of interactive web 2.0-based projects which will allow people to share, access and participate in the games.

Possible projects include social networking sites, and facilities for spectators and competitors to capture digital photos on their cameras and phones and upload and share them on the web.

The organisers hope that the emphasis on new media will make the games more accessible to a younger audience.

Organisers also want to make London 2012 the most environmentally friendly Olympics ever.

With 10,000 PCs, two data centres and 1,000 servers, the IT strategy will be key in achieving that goal.

Atos Origin, the main IT supplier for the games, will start designing the IT infrastructure for London 2012 after the Beijing games have taken place. The company will then identify specific green initiatives.
